Create a login experience for legally authorized representatives
Background
Science 37 is a research and technology company that specializes in decentralized clinical trials. Through study build and electronic data capture software, this expands access to the 90%+ of patients unable to participate in strictly site-based research.
In clinical trials, a legally authorized representative (LAR) is an individual authorized under law to make decisions on behalf of another, such as a minor or a person with cognitive disability.
Problem
Our products needed a new participant representative experience. This meant allowing trial staff to designate a legally authorized representative (LAR), as well as the LAR to login via the mobile application. The addition of this new role also brought on the challenge of cases where a user may be involved in more than one trial. New designs needed to create a seamless experience and consider several scenarios:
Participant in more than one trial
An adult could be a legally authorized representative for a minor participating in a trial, as well as participating themselves in another
An adult could be a legally authorized representative for multiple minors (such as 2 children) participating in a trial
First, our site staff needed the ability to add a participant representative
This was made possible via the participant profile page by creating an “association” with the legally authorized representative.
Once a representative was added, that user had access via the mobile app
We wanted to enhance the mobile experience to clearly communicate all the trials the user was associated with and allow them to easily switch between them.
Improve the general visual design of the task page
While we were making adjustments to the mobile experience, I proposed general visual enhancements to make the homepage more useful and task-oriented.
The new task screen (application home page) was redesigned to:
Surface frequent actions, such as logging a new side effect
Make it clear what tasks are due today and by what time
Provide details on how long each task will take
Enable a view of what’s coming, allowing users to preview dense legal documents, such as a consent form
Avoid back and forth between participant and representative’s names
